The Dream Chest
Time & Location
About the Event
Mama Fat, a name proudly borne and given without malice, has dreamed about purchasing her own home all her adult life. Transplanted from the deep South to St. Louis, Missouri, she finds herself still renting twenty years later with her husband, Popsie. Yet, she clutches fiercely to her dream and loads her old cedar chest, that she calls her “dream chest,” with treasures she intends to use in that new house. A keeper of secrets, especially from Popsie, Mama Fat has managed to salt away a small fortune over the years doing domestic work and playing the numbers with her bookie. On one Sunday during her traditional gatherings with her coterie of quirky friends, she learns about a house for sale. The house becomes her quest and she shares her goal with only her best friend and confidant, Miz Anderson.
Mama Fat learns that her only son Larry, who she has coddled all his life, has run afoul of the law and is arrested. Panicking, she vows to save him from going to jail at any cost and arranges to spirit him out of town. However, she is the only one who has the money to finance his escape. Again, the only other person who knows about this money is Miz Anderson and she attempts to talk Mama Fat out of this hairbrained scheme. Mama Fat must make the difficult decision to help her son or forego her dream. Scarlett Finney’s heart rending debut play gives us a glimpse into the lives of these characters based on real-life family and friends. It is a tribute to her grandmother who everyone knew as Mama Fat.
